Sesaths are unique Sri Lankan ornamental sunshades, historically used in royal ceremonies and as part of religious festivals. Traditionally multi-coloured and attached to a long, decorative wooden pole, many can still be seen in Buddhist temples and administrative buildings. They are handwoven using coloured strips of tala palm and pieces of shiny mica, a natural sheet silicate mined in Sri Lanka. These modern versions come without the pole and make striking wall decorations.
